Whitehouse, Texas is a small city in Smith County and a part of the Tyler Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is made up of just a few neighborhoods and is the 264th largest community in the state. It has a wonderful subtropical climate and it is a warm and welcoming community that is somewhat racially and ethnically diverse. English is the primary language though a number of residents are also fluent in Spanish. The community was established prior to 1843, though exactly when is unclear. It was not until 1845 that residents settled on the name Whitehouse for their budding community. In its early years the main industry was agriculture and remained so until after WWII. The community was incorporated in 1953. The community has remained small, but they are proud of their heritage. The community holds a YesterYear Celebration annually which features parades, carnival activities, battle reenactments and more.
The city spans approximately 3.8 square miles and in 2010, the population was 7,660 and the per capita income was $24,377. By 2013, the estimated median household income was $71,135 and the estimated per capita income was $24,561. In the same year the mean price on all housing units was $148,500 and the median gross rent was $1,178. In 2014, the population reached 8,044 and the population estimate for 2015 is a thriving 8,189. Nearly a quarter of residents over the age of 25 hold four-year degrees or better and the community has a mixed workforce of white and blue collar workers as well as a diverse job market.
Public education for the city of Whitehouse is provided by the Whitehouse Independent School District, which is made up of approximately seven schools. Local schools include Staton-Smith Elementary, Holloway Middle School, Whitehouse High School and others. The community features a number of wonderful parks and recreation facilities, including the Whitehouse Sports Complex, Gardenview Park, the City Splash Park and others. The community is known for its good schools, low crime rates, peaceful streets and high rates of home-ownership.
