Flint, TX Community Information

Flint-CityFlint, Texas is an unincorporated community located just south of Tyler in Smith County, Texas. The community has a humid subtropical climate with wet hot summers and mild winters. As it is unincorporated there is no public transportation in Flint so commuting is a must. However, despite being unincorporated the community does have its own post office. It is primarily a residential community made up of predominantly traditional single family homes. The majority of homes in the community were built after 1950 and of these homes more than half were built after 1989. The most common home size is 4-6 bedrooms. It is a stable community where the majority of homes are owner-occupied giving it a secure and stable atmosphere.

The community is named in honor of Robert P. Flynt, a local landowner at the time of its settlement. The first post office in the area was established in 1887. The first postmaster, Charles B. Brown misspelled the name "Flynt" as Flint on the forms and the community became Flint. By 1890, the community had a doctor, three cotton gins, a general store and a population of 25 residents. Agriculture was the economic base of the community and by 1902 the local farms produced more than 85 railroad cars worth of food to ship out. Common crops were peaches, tomatoes, cabbage and more. By this time there were approximately 100 families farming in the area. Schools were established in Flint in 1903 and by 1925 the population was 200. Growth faltered and the area struggled during the Great Depression with the population falling to 150 where it stayed until the 1990s.

Today it remains a largely rural area with a mixed workforce. In 2000, the population was estimated at 700. Great growth occurred in the area and in 2014 the population was estimated at 12,886 and the population density was about 291 people per square mile. Housing in the area consists primarily of traditional single family dwellings. The current median list price for homes in Flint is approximately $163,900.
