Top 8 Apps for Homeowners and Home Buyers

Smartphones are our own little portable computers. The creation of apps and accessories has made them so much more than communication devices. The average user checks their phone about 45 times a day, while this number is nearly double for people under 25. And it is no wonder – our smartphones and their apps offer us new worlds to explore!

One of the great things about apps is, there is literally something for everyone. Today, however, we’re focusing on useful apps for homeowners and renters. With the apps below, you can find inspiration for redecorating your home, organizing it, finding new homes for sale, and saving money.

Renovating? Get Inspired!

HOUZZ (free)

The most popular home design app is Houzz. Enjoy being inspired from their blogs and design ideas on your tablet or phone. You can use View in My Room 3D to see products actually in your space prior to purchase. How great is that? Even if you aren’t redecorating or renovating, you’re bound to enjoy the creativity on this fabulous app!

iHandy Carpenter ($1.99) or iHandy Level (free)

Who would have ever thought that by holding a phone up against a wall you would be able to level artwork, shelves, and mirrors? You can do this and more! The full app has a plumb bob, surface level, bubble level bar, ruler and protractor. With the free iHandy level app, just think of all the extra nail holes you won’t be putting in your wall the next time you try to hang a new painting!

Rooomy (IOS only, free)

Seeing your existing or new furniture in a room can be difficult. Rooomy to the rescue! With it you can convert 2-D photos into 3-D renderings, allowing you to see different configurations of furnishings and wall art in a particular place. This could be massively helpful for new homeowners trying to visualize their own furnishings in a new home.

Color 911 ($3.99) IOS Only

Color911 lets you quickly create color palettes with colors you choose from any photo (of course you’ve taken a photo of the room you want to re-decorate, right?). The app features 100 downloadable color schemes, and you can create your own palette. Once you find the colors you want to use, simply share or email with your designer, friends, or family. This is the best for color inspiration!

Apps for Sellers

If you’re preparing to put your home on the market, you probably have a list of repairs and cosmetic improvements to accomplish first. These apps will help you organize your to-do list so you can list your home more quickly and efficiently.

Homesnap (free)

Created for real estate agents and loved by home buyers and sellers, the Homesnap app lets you take a photo of any home, anywhere, to learn more about it. If you’re thinking about selling, get photos of some of the homes in your neighborhood to discover their value. The app isn’t perfect, but you can get a general idea of the value of your home compared to others in your neighborhood. You can also see what your home is worth right now with our free home value tool!

Wunderlist (free)

Wunderlist is a popular productivity app useful for everyone. Home sellers can take advantage of its to-do list and task management features to create a list and add tasks, due dates, and reminders. You can also email them to anyone, such as your real estate agent or spouse. This really is a must-have app for everyone!

Apps for Home Buyers

When you’re ready to buy a home, there are a couple of apps that can help you stay on top of the process. You’re no doubt looking at lots of homes and neighborhoods and it can be hard to remember where you saved all the information you’ve accumulated. These apps help you easily enter information and then find it again when you need it.

AroundMe (free)

If you’re looking for a home in a neighborhood you are unfamiliar with, this may be the app for you. With it you can find the location of the nearest bank, bar, gas station, grocery store, and much more. It also offers in-app purchases. It’s a great tool to use while traveling, too!

Mortgage Calculator+ ($1.99)

Some mortgage apps are available for free, but many seem to have glitches that are irritating to the user, according to reviews.

This popular app is simple to use and allows you to save and compare multiple mortgages. You can also view an amortization table. Use this app to find out how much you may qualify for, and what your payments might be for a home. For the greatest accuracy, consider getting pre-approved for a loan before you invest your time in looking at homes for sale so you’ll know for sure how much home you can afford.

All of the apps above are useful, but none are as useful and helpful as working with a real estate agent that has your best interests at heart!
