Tyler - City Page3Tyler is the county seat of Smith County, Texas. The city has approximately 30 neighborhoods and is the 34th largest community in the state. It is also the hub of education and technology in the region. Many technology companies call the city home, as well as the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and The University of Texas at Tyler. The city has earned the nickname “Rose Capital of the World” and is home to the largest rose garden in the United States. The city has a mixed workforce and job market of both white and blue collar workers and positions. Nearly 30% of adults over the age of 25 in the city hold four-year degrees or higher. It is an upper-middle class community in comparison to state and national economic standards. Tyler is very ethnically and racially diverse.

The city spans approximately 54.4 square miles. In 2010, the population of Tyler was 96,900 giving it a population density of 1,782 people per square mile. In the same year the per capita income was $26,132. By 2013, the estimated median household income was $44,467 and the estimated per capita income was $26,718. Further in 2013, the mean housing price on all housing units in Tyler was $158,651 and the median gross rent was $827. It is a thriving community and according to the 2012-2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial report for the city, the top five employers were Trinity Mother Frances Health System, the East Texas Medical Center, Brookshire Grocery Company, the Tyler Independent School System and Trane. The two main industries remain rose growing and manufacturing.

The city of Tyler was named after President John Tyler and it became the county seat in 1846. In the same year, the first city elections were held. Four short years later, in 1850 the city incorporated. By 1860, Tyler had grown to a population of 1024. The town along with its industries and businesses flourished. During the Civil War the city was the site of the largest Confederate artillery plant in the state and the largest prisoner of war camp. After the war ended, the city continued to flourish and the population grew steadily. Cotton and corn were the staple crops in the area, but fruit began to gain importance in the local economy. In the 1920s the rose industry bloomed in the area and by 1940 half the roses in the country were grown in Tyler. Today the rose industry and the city continue to thrive.

Public education in Tyler is provided by three school districts, the primary school district is the Tyler Independent School District. The remaining two are the Whitehouse Independent School District and the Chapel Hill Independent School District. The city annually hosts the Texas Rose Festival and is home to the Rose Museum, the Caldwell Zoo and approximately 25 parks and gardens.
